Situation: Four thermowells on the top of a regeneration unit had deteriorated and required immediate replacement to continue operation and control the unit.
Operating Conditions: The service was hydrocarbon vapors fluidized at 1350ºF and 13 psig. The vessel was 1" carbon steel backed by 5" of refractory with longhorns.
Solution: Team built four special stainless steel thermowells with stellite overlay. Nozzles and packing glands also were built. Team then performed four 3" 300# angle hot taps and installed the thermowells through the high temperature packing glands.
