In a total isomerization plant at a mid-western refinery, there were 658 multiple screwed connections that had to be checked for fugitive emissions.
The refinery used an OVA-108 emission meter to check these connections, and found 91 locations showing hydrogen leakage of up to 1%.
Plant maintenance personnel used several sealants - without success - to try and stop these leaks, including conventional liquid thread sealants, pastes, and tape.
According to plant personnel, "The hydrogen leaked right through the other sealants."
Team personnel suggested using Hi-Pro Seal®.
The thermosetting resin was applied to all 91 of the leaking joints.
Following Hi-Pro Seal's® application, all 91 connections sealed and passed inspection for fugitive emissions.
With the application of Hi-Pro Seal®, plant maintenance personnel also reduced the potential fire hazard posed by hydrogen leakage.
